LED lights have been around since the 1960s, but have only recently been used as a skin treatment. Different wavelengths of the visible light spectrum correspond to different colors of LED light and penetrate the skin to different depths.
Red light play a role in production of collagen, a protein that makes up a large part of connective tissue and helps the skin to recover.
Blue light is most often used to treat acne. It may do this by reducing activity in the sebaceous glands, so they produce less of the oil that can plug the hair follicles, leading to acne.

How it works
During LED therapy, devices send light waves deep into the skin to trigger natural intracellular reactions. Depending on the light, your skin is going to respond differently. "If [the light is] red, your skin responds by building, strengthening, and maximizing cellular structure. Red light is also believed to target oil glands to reduce cytokines, which cause inflammation and play a role in chronic acne. In the case of blue light, specific wavelengths stimulate production of oxygen radicals that kill acnes bacteria, all without damaging skin
LED light therapy works at a cellular level (especially great to fight active acne and rosacea). The soothing, deep penetrating LED lights target deep into cells heightening their internal functions, photo-stimulating dermal blood flow, and creates faster healing so your skin always looks rejuvenated.
